Surf Beach Rocket Launch Viewing
If you’re eager to witness a rocket launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, Surf Beach offers an unparalleled vantage point. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of this awe-inspiring event:
Location: Surf Beach
Address: Surf Beach, W Ocean Ave, Vandenberg Air Force Base, Lompoc, CA 93436
Proximity to Launch Complexes:
Surf Beach provides a unique opportunity to observe rocket launches up close. The only location where the public can view (photograph) the actual ignition and liftoff of rockets from SLC-4 is where Ocean Ave ends at Surf Beach Train Station. This location is at the edge of the safety exclusion zone, 3.5 miles from SLC-4. It is off-limits when SpaceX boosters return to the launch site. All other launches from SL-4 are viewable. Also an excellent location for viewing Minuteman launches. Parking is restricted so arrive early. From this site, you’ll have visibility of several launch complexes:
Launch Complexes 1, 2, & 10: Get a clear view of these launch pads.
Launch Complexes 3 & 4: Although these are farther from the pad, the elevated terrain offers a good perspective.
Launch Complexes 6 & 8: You’ll also catch glimpses of rockets launching from these sites.
What You Need to Know
Military Base: Vandenberg Space Force Base is an active military base, which means that entering the base itself to watch a rocket launch is not possible for most people.
Public Viewing Area: Surf Beach is a viewing area located outside the base. While you won’t be on the base itself, you’ll still have a great vantage point.
Arrive Early: Since Surf Beach can get crowded during launches, arrive early to secure your spot.
Surf Beach Viewing: Plan Ahead for Parking!
Parking in the main lot is limited and can fill up rapidly, especially for popular launches. If the Surf Beach lot is full, access to the road leading to it will be restricted.
Ocean Park Alternative: A Scenic Walk to the Launch Site:
Don’t worry if the Surf Beach lot is full! Head right onto Ocean Park Road. You’ll find additional parking available in the Ocean Park area. From there, enjoy a pleasant approximately 30-minute walk along the train tracks towards the Surf Beach station. This walk offers a unique perspective and will bring you to the same excellent viewing location. Remember to be extremely vigilant and stay aware of your surroundings when walking near the train tracks, as they may still be in use.
